Restorative Yoga Therapy

Restorative Yoga Therapy with Coaching is offered on a one-to-one basis for purposes ranging from general fitness and wellbeing, to addressing specific health concerns. In each case, the therapist adapts the tools of Yoga and Life Coaching to meet the needs of the individual.

The healing techniques are taught to each client to make up their own personalised toolbox. These tools can then be used by the client for the rest of their life for maintaining long-term health and fitness.

As a holistic form of healing, Yoga Therapy/ Coaching views the human system as not just the physical body, but also mind, personality, spirit and emotions. These dimensions of the human system are interconnected and therefore interdependent. For example, when a person becomes angry (emotional), breathing becomes short and shallow (physical), the face turns red and the hands tremble (physical), attitude becomes negative (mental), and communication becomes aggressive (personality). For this reason, it is taught that just because an illness manifests at the physical level, the cause can be at any of the levels, such as the emotional level. By the same token, any practice a therapist offers has the potential to impact every dimension of the client's system. For example, a meditative practice may influence not only our mind and emotions, but our physical body, as well. A breathing practice may influence mind and personality, and so on.

To begin the treatment, the client fills out an intake form detailing their health history, lifestyle, diet, activities and intentions. Once the therapist understands the individual's issue(s) and circumstances, a home programme is developed. Each course is carefully constructed to stay well within the physical limits of that person. The therapist then instructs this personalised programme to the client, revising it according to the client's response. The client is coached to practice this course at home on their own schedule. The client becomes an active participant in their healing process and is thus able to take responsibility for their own healing. After the client has practiced the yoga programme at home for some time - lengths vary for different people and situations - the client has follow-up sessions, as determined by the needs and situation of that individual. The home programme will be revised according to the changing needs of the client. As the individual's condition improves, their personalised home programme will also evolve to reflect their new abilities. The Coaching ensures the client is able to maintain this holistic way of being healthy for the rest of their life.
